Holy Week is the most significant week in Catholicism. Spanning from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday, it marks the final stretch before Easter Sunday, the celebration of Jesus' Resurrection. During this sacred week Catholics pray and reflect on the profound journey of Jesus' suffering, sacrifice, and victory over death.
Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.
The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum during Holy Week — from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery.
With Holy Thursday evening Mass, the Church begins the sacred Easter Triduum and devotes herself to the remembrance of the Last Supper.
On Good Friday, the church commemorates the fact that Christ freely suffered his passion and death because of the sins of all, that all might be saved. Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence.
On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory.
Easter, the most important day in the year, is the day Jesus rose from the dead after being crucified. The empty tomb means that Jesus's words rang true. He fulfilled the promises of Scripture and conquered sin and death.
The season of Easter is 50 days of joyful celebration of the Lord's resurrection from the dead and his sending forth of the Holy Spirit. The season of Easter concludes on the day of Pentecost.
