Beginning January 9, we commence a four session class on the ancient and beautiful Gregorian Chant. The Chant is the first music in history to be notated, and includes a large repertoire of chants for the entire liturgical year of the church: music for Mass as well as all the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily round of prayer still sung in monasteries and convents, as well as some cathedrals and churches.
There will be four weekly sessions each Tuesday at 4 pm in Centennial Hall. These sessions will include a brief introduction to the history of chant, an overview of the modern square notation, and the opportunity to sing some easier chants at each session, including favorites that are still well-known such as the Salve Regina, and the Mass of the Angels.
The classes will be led by our Music Director, Michael Mello, who has a Masters Degree from Stanford in Early Music and Gregorian Chant. All are invited. No registration required.
